Winged Textures

Humboldt Wildlife Refuge, Humboldt County, California, June 24th, 2023

Saturday was a gloomy, gloomy day. I decided to head to the Humboldt Wildlife Refuge, restored wetlands along the southern edge of Humboldt Bay.

I didn’t take many landscape shots, because they all looked like this in the gloom 😆

As you can see in the photo above, it was low tide, which means the wading birds come into feed, like this Great Egret, flying away with twigs for a nest 😁

I came across turkey vultures, scavenging on the trail 😲 This one was just about to take off.

They launched into the air and circled around me several times, providing me with some great shots. I never realized the intricate texturing and coloring of their feathers before.

Then another flyby from a Great Egret, giving me some interesting angles. I particularly like the shot from directly below 😍

The Great Egrets nest in a tall grove of trees to south.

This shot of a seagull is rather compelling, I think 😊

A flyby from this hawk was so short and sudden I only managed to get one shot in focus. Plus a cute little swallow-looking bird

A few more pics of Great Egrets (they’re one of my favorites 😁)

And one random shot of some wildflowers ☺️
