Corkscrew Tree to Brown Creek Loop, 5-20-23, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Humboldt County, CA
The day was gloomy and chilly, we haven’t seen much sun for the past week here in Humboldt, but spring is bursting to life nonetheless.
As soon as I drove into the park along Drury Parkway, a small gang of Roosevelt elk were grazing right next to the road! New antlers are growing in, last time I saw elk, several had just shed their antlers.

They had a few feisty interaction with each other 🤣

I wanted to mix things up for this hike again, so I parked near the Corkscrew Tree, right off the parkway. I’d seen the sign for it many times, but this was my first time checking it out – it’s quite impressive – those massive trunks spiraling around each other like nature’s sculpture of the spiral within.

I continued north on the Karl Knapp. In the low light, these trees along Prairie Creek were absolutely captivating!

That last one might wind up for sale on my website, I love the formation of the branches 😍
After a short while, I crossed over Drury parkway and onto the South Fork Trail to make a loop with the Rhododendron Trail and the Brown Creek Trail.
In the low light, the bright green of new growth was stunningly vibrant 💚

The redwoods are just as beautiful in the gloom, as they are in sunshine. Different colors come out in the lower light.

And lots of faces, everywhere I looked!

A few beautiful fungal friends 🍄

More lush greenery! Very rejuvenating to be walking through all that new life 🌿

And more beautiful redwoods 😁

These little pretty white flowers are springing up as the trilliums fade in glory.

It was a lovely, gloomy day under the redwoods ☺️
