Winged Textures
Humboldt Wildlife Refuge, Humboldt County, California, June 24th, 2023 Saturday was a gloomy, gloomy day. I decided to head to the Humboldt Wildlife Refuge, restored wetlands along the southern edge of Humboldt Bay. I didn’t take many landscape shots, because they all looked like this in the gloom π As you can see in theContinue reading “Winged Textures”
Karl Knapp to West Ridge Trail 6-17-23
I returned to one of my favorite trails in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park – a loop comprising the Karl Knapp and West Ridge Trails. Particularly in the busy summer months, this part of the park is farthest away from the visitor center and has the smallest crowds. Plus, there’s a steep, half-mile climb upContinue reading “Karl Knapp to West Ridge Trail 6-17-23”

Iris Superbloom!
I went a little crazy taking photos of irises last Thursday at the Arcata Community Forest, Humboldt County, CA. I couldn’t resist, they’re so stunning. Some are starting to fade, but they’re still everywhere from the superbloom this year π A couple non-square photos… A for the finale… a banana slug, apparently enjoying a fallenContinue reading “Iris Superbloom!”
Headwaters Forest Reserve
I checked out a new area on Saturday, the Headwaters Forest Reserve, south of Eureka in Humboldt County, CA. The first mile of the hike is paved, and seems to be very popular and crowded (for Humboldt π) It’s mostly new growth redwoods, this area was reclaimed from logging and turned into a reserve. SoContinue reading “Headwaters Forest Reserve”

Arcata Community Forest, 5-31-23, Humboldt County, California I headed out to the Arcata Community Forest for a hike yesterday afternoon. And once it wasContinue reading “Irises Galore!”

Elk and Green New Growth
Corkscrew Tree to Brown Creek Loop, 5-20-23, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Humboldt County, CA The day was gloomy and chilly, we haven’t seen much sun for the past week here in Humboldt, but spring is bursting to life nonetheless. As soon as I drove into the park along Drury Parkway, a small gang ofContinue reading “Elk and Green New Growth”
